Day2: Tsumago to Okuwa

The most extensive day on the Nakasendo Trail unfolds with a breathtaking and varied hike.

This section of the Nakasendo Way meanders through tranquil valleys and captivating forests, filled with bamboo groves and towering Japanese cedar, offering some of the most untouched and picturesque scenery along the route. The hike along the Nakasendo Trail leads to hidden villages, old tea houses, and scenic viewpoints that showcase the rich history of this ancient highway.

After the day’s adventure, a short train ride takes you to Kiso-Fukushima, a historic post town in the heart of the Kiso Valley that once thrived as a political and commercial hub during the Edo period. Here, you’ll stay at a traditional Japanese ryokan, where you can unwind in soothing hot spring baths and experience an authentic kaiseki dinner, a multi-course meal featuring seasonal local ingredients.
